Answers to Some of Your Common Questions About Public Health Service
Q.      Where is Your Office?
A.      Our offices are located in the basement level of the City Hall,      168 Main Street, Berlin, NH

Q.      When is your office open?
A.      Regular Office Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:30 to noon, 1:00 to 4:30.  Home Health Nursing visit occur during the regular day.  On Call Home Health Nurses are available 24 hours per day and can be paged by calling 752-3131 after business hours.

Q.      What can the Nurses at the Health Department do?
A.      Our Office Nurses will check your blood pressure, blood sugars, and cholesterol.  We do a foot clinic program weekly.  We can administer medications, B12 for example, with your doctor’s order.  We can offer sound information concerning your health questions.
Our Home Health Visiting Nurse program brings skilled nursing care, occupational, speech, and physical therapy, and home health aides to your home under doctor’s orders.  

Q.      Do you charge fees for services?
A.      Some services require small fees $5.00 to $10.00.  We do provide many services free to the community.  Home Health Skilled services can be private pay as you need, private insurance billed by us, or Medicare and Medicaid covered.  Call to inquire.  We are a public agency and will always work with clients to manage financial issues.

Q.      Can I see a doctor at the Health Department?
A.      We do not have a doctor on staff,  We can assist people in contacting doctors for needed services.

Q.      I have no heat in my apartment?
A.      State and local health code require that a landlord provide minimum housing standards including heat and water.  If your landlord is need doing so, a written complaint can be filed and the health officer can inform the owner of the law.

Q.      My neighbors yard is a mess and full of trash, can you make him clean it?
A.      You can complete a written complaint form listing the conditions and the health officer will investigate the complaint.  In some cases state and local health codes are in violation and owners can be ordered to resolve the violations.

Q.      My child has tested a high lead content, what should I do?
A.      The local health department can provide you with basic literature and information concerning lead in homes, lead as a health risk, and lead mitigation.  We do not test for lead.  We will refer you to the State of NH Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention  Program, 1-800-852-3345  ext. 4507 or 271-4507, http://www.dhhs.gov/DHHS/CLPPP/default.htm.

Q.      I have mold growing my apartment?
A.      The public health officer is a resource for information concerning mold, but NH has not specific laws regarding mold.  The health officer will recommend contacting The NH Department of Environmental Services, Environmental & Occupational Health, 271-3911, rmartin@des.state.nh.us 

Q.       I have found a dead bird in my yard?
A.      The health officer will provide you will basic information concerning West Nile Virus and EEE.  Depending on the condition of the bird, manner of death, and species the health officer will come to your home and collect the bird.  The health officer will contact the state laboratory and ask if the bird should be transported for testing.  The state will use specific criteria to determine if the bird should be transported and tested, not all birds fit the criteria.  If the state wants to test the bird the health officer will transport or coordinate the transport of the bird to the laboratory.  

Q.      My neighbor is burning trash or used oil in his woodstove and it is making a fowl odor and black smoke in my yard.
A.      What you neighbor is doing may be illegal, file a written complaint with the office for the health officer to investigate.
