Berlin is the principal city in Northern New Hampshire. The quality of life experienced here is indeed exceptional, with recreation activities four seasons long. Northern New Hampshire boasts the largest and most diverse alpine and cross country ski complex in the east . . . eight major ski areas are within 35 miles of Berlin and hundreds of cross country and snowmobile trails zigzag over the rugged terrain. In the summer, crystal clear lakes dot the countryside providing great fishing as well as swimming and water skiing. And for the ambitious, more than 150 miles of trails link the scenic peaks of the famous Presidential Mountain Range.
Berlin's first permanent settler was William Sessions who came from Gilead, Maine. He erected Berlin's first house, a log cabin, in 1824. Other settlers soon joined Sessions along this section of the river, which was suitable for farming. In 1827, Samuel and Benjamin Thompson bought the Sessions' place which became known as the Thompson Farm. The large, old barns at this site were built later, in the days of logging with horses, by the Brown Company to house the company's horses. Today, this site is now Berlin's Maynesboro Industrial Park, which was developed in 1974 along with the establishment of the Berlin Industrial Development and Park Authority, and serves an important business center for Berlin.
