PEER TO PEER WELLNESS SUPPORT GROUP
SUMMER BREAK DOESN’T MEAN PUTTING ON THE
BRAKES TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
The Peer to Peer Wellness Support group will be taking a break during the summer months. We wish all our participants continued health as they work towards their goal of being their best individual self.
A brief summary of some topics we discussed during the last ten weeks and should try to remember for optimal health include.....
Accept Change - While some changes may be welcomed like nicer weather, some may cause disruption to your schedule like relatives visiting. Remember to try to eat as healthy as possible, exercise, and seek support. We all will have some reason to vent and know you are not alone.
Holidays/Vacations - Swim, take a tour, anything to stay active. Enjoy that special treat now and then but fill up on the healthy food. Summer has an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. Start the day motivated and end the day satisfied you did your best.
Stay Motivated - Remember you are worth it! Do something today that your future self will thank you for.
Challenge Yourself - Set small goals that are measurable and attainable. Will you walk a little further today? Will you skip dessert today? Will you journal more days than not this week?
Be Adventurous - Not asking you to go mountain climbing - simply try something new to keep excitement in your life. Is there a fruit or vegetable you never tried? How about trying a yoga class? When was the last time you were on a bicycle? Or went dancing?
Accept the Ebb & Flow of Life - Some days may seem more challenging than others. If you are in a decline, it is time to honestly evaluate your choices. Are you getting enough sleep? Are you eating healthy? Are you exercising? Tracking? If this is a journey of a thousand miles and you are only at mile 1, remember some have not even got off the couch! Take that next step and go forward to mile 2!
Eat the 5 Colors Daily - The different colors in fruits and vegetables all offer unique nutrients. Eating all five colors each day will assist in a balanced diet.
Red - Berries, watermelon, tomatoes, peppers
Yellow - Oranges, carrots, lemons, mangos
Green - Broccoli, kiwis, spinach, lettuce
Blue/Purple - Blueberries, purple cabbage, plums, eggplant, blackberries
White - Bananas, cauliflower, garlic, onions, potatoes
Temptation - If you can’t resist - remove. If you can’t remove, visualize resisting. Like muscles, the more self-control is practiced, the stronger it gets. Congratulate yourself for every temptation you resisted.
Track/Journal/Record - Writing things down, whether it is your food intake, your emotions, or your goals will force you to evaluate where you are compared to where you want to be. You may also discover a pattern that you can adjust or plan ahead to successfully handle the next time. You may also realize you are at a better point in your life than you thought and you should take pride in that.
Strive for 8 Hours of Sleep Every Night - Poor sleep triggers a chemical reaction in your brain that may contribute to a lack of self-control. A good night’s sleep is just as important as eating healthy and exercising.
HAVE A GREAT SUMMER AND REMEMBER.........................
STAYING HEALTHY MAY AT TIMES BE HARD -
DOESN’T MEAN IT’S IMPOSSIBLE.
